It is in this historical context that Lope de Vega wrote El perro del hortelano, one of his most popular plays. It is about Diana’s tricks, the whimsical countess of Belford, to have Teodoro, her secretary, on her side. She soon realises that she has fallen for him after she finds him flirting with one of her maids.
Her social status stops Diana from confessing Teodoro her feelings, which results in overtures and six of one and half a dozen of the other, which deeply confuse the apparently humble secretary. It will be the providential intervention of Tristan, the servant, that will solve the situation.
Jealousy, affairs, plots and an agile verse are the ingredients of this play, which company Viento Sur performed in Seville in July 2005. The setting recalls the 17th century open-air theatres.
