AND THEY DRAW!
From October 5 to 21 - 8:00 p.m. opening

In the years before the Spanish Civil War, the Government expanded the system of summer camps for working-class children. In order to organize the evacuation of children from critical areas, he turned to this network after the outbreak of war. It is from these colonies that more than two thousand drawings made by children come from. With the aim of offering economic and evacuation aid —mainly on the Mediterranean coast—, in 1937, the American Association for the Welfare of Spanish Children (Spanish Child Welfare Association of America) was established in New York.

At the end of that same year, a prominent member of the 'Quakers' and art collector, Josep A. Weissberger, after touring the children's colonies and collecting more than a thousand drawings —currently deposited at Columbia University—, organized various exhibitions in important North American art galleries, standing out the one of May 1938 in New York, in the «Lord & Taylor's» department stores. The National Library of Spain is also the repository of another 1,171 drawings (accessible through its website).

With the desire to publicize these children's works, also valuing the effort and integrity of children, the House of Culture is offering a collection of 40 drawings from the archives of the BNE.
