FRIENDS OF HISTORY. “BETWEEN CULTURE AND COUNTERCULTURE: THE GYPSIES IN THE MODERN ERA”
5:30 p.m.

From their mysterious appearance in the 15th century, the Romani people became an unexpected protagonist in European history. They managed to cross borders thanks to their ingenuity, presenting themselves with forged documents as noble pilgrims from “Little Egypt” to gain the protection of kings and cities. Once settled, their way of life transformed into a true “counterculture,” forging a unique identity marked by legal persecution, economic exploitation, and their resistance. Through art and chronicles of the period, we will discover how the image of “the Romani” was formed in the Modern Era, an image that has always oscillated between fascination with their customs and fear of the different.
