FRIENDS OF HISTORY. BETWEEN CULTURE AND COUNTERCULTURE. THE CULTURAL METAMORPHOSIS OF THE ROMA PEOPLE IN MODERN SPAIN
5:30 PM
After centuries of cultural exchange and fascination in Europe, the Roma people faced, from the 16th century onward, the relentless machinery of the nascent modern state. From the early decrees of the Catholic Monarchs and the penal measures of the Habsburgs, to the reform projects promoted by the Enlightenment in the 18th century—with figures like the Count of Floridablanca advocating their integration into the productive life of the kingdom—legal history reveals both the difficulties of the era in harmonizing diverse ways of life and the attempts to establish frameworks for coexistence.
Through notarial documents, parliamentary records, and royal decrees from our historical archives, Francisco Javier Sánchez Blanco will offer a rigorous approach to this key period for understanding the historical and social evolution of the Roma community in our country.
